Hello there freshmen and older students! The new academic year is already starting at full speed. Especially for freshmen, there has surely been a lot of information to take in during the week. So here is some more information about the university community's sports activities.
The most important first step is to pay the SportUni membership fee, if you didn't do it when you registered for the academic year via Oili. Payment instructions can be found on the SportUni website. Most of the sports activities take place in SportUni's facilities, so the membership is practically mandatory if you want to participate in anything.
Every Monday from 19:00 to 20:30, Luuppi plays a different sport in the Atalpa ball games hall in the city centre, together with other student associations from the city centre campus. The semester's sessions will start now at the end of August or the beginning of September. If you want to prepare in good time, join the sports sessions Telegram channel now. The sports sessions will also appear in Luuppi's event calendar and will be announced on the Telegram information channel when the time is right. In addition, we have usually organized one sports trial in the autumn and spring. I haven't had time to finalize the autumn activities yet, but something related to archery, climbing, and urban warfare is likely on the agenda.
Next, more information about the aforementioned SportUni. SportUni is the sports service of the Tampere university community. The sports service offers various sports opportunities, most importantly group exercise, courses, gym services, and ball game sessions. There are centres in the city centre (Atalpa), in Hervanta (Tamppi Areena and Bommari), on the Kauppi campus, and soon in Hippos. The centres have halls for ball games, group exercise, and gyms. University students have access to all centres, so just go ahead and choose the location that is closest or most appealing to you.
More detailed information about SportUni's various ball game opportunities is available here. Instructions for group exercise can be found on this page and the selection is here. Information and a list of courses can be found on this page. The courses start now in the autumn and last from a few weeks to half a year. They require pre-registration and usually cost a small fee. Course registration opens on August 25th, and is open until September 3rd. So now is the perfect time to browse the course selection. The best ones at the moment are the handstand, splits, running technique, and swimming technique courses.
The university has hobby clubs that focus on different sports. In the city centre, there is Akateeminen mahti, and information about its sports divisions can be found on their website. In Hervanta, there is Teekkarien urheilu- ja voimailukerho (TURVOKE), whose divisions are listed here.
It is also possible to get study credits from sports activities through the Sports Tutor course! I myself act as a tutor for all of Luuppi, but the course implementation allows you to be a sports tutor for your own group of friends.
